The cannabis industry has never been an easy place to build a business, but for some operators, the struggle has sharpened their vision and forced them into resilience. I recently sat down with Massachusetts-based founder Jason Reposa, who’s been carving out his lane in the edibles market with his Good Vibes line. What struck me most wasn’t just the product; it was Jason’s unflinching honesty about the hard mode that is cannabis entrepreneurship. “I started the company because I had a medical issue,” Jason told me. “I needed to fix my body. I tried cannabis, and it worked really, really…

When people think of ‘genetics’, they often picture white lab coats and million-dollar facilities. My mushroom genetics lab doesn’t look like that. It looks like countertops stacked with agar plates, cabinets filled with jars, and magnetic stir plates humming in the kitchen where my dishes should be. I’ve turned my whole house into a workspace. Not because I planned to, but because mushrooms demanded it. I’ve been working this way for years, building crosses, isolating traits, and preserving tissue. What I’ve learned is simple: you don’t need a million-dollar setup to change the future. You need curiosity, consistency, and the…

I’m in a bus on the Thika Super Highway, headed to Juja. It’s dark outside, but I leave my window open, loving how the wind feels against my face. My brother and I had a quick sesh before I left for home, and the THC is just now kicking in.  Gengetone music is blasting from the speakers, and as I nod my head along to the bassline, something my brother once said to me comes to mind. “Why do artists feel the need to mention the fact that they smoke weed in every single song they write? Like, do they…

It’s a blazing hot 92-degree (33°C) day at the Casa Flor farm in Willits, California, and the first attribute of the towering cannabis plants that I take in is their ability to shade me from the sun. Two days after the autumnal equinox, the coolest place to be is down in the dirt among the stalks, listening to the drip of the irrigation. I’m part of a fact-finding tour to discover the world’s best weed, an annual expedition hosted by the Humboldt Seed Company. The mission for myself and the international group I’ve joined is to gather data on which…

While cannabis is now legal in almost half the country, thousands are still arrested in other parts of the United States simply for carrying weed. In 2024, more than 20% of drug arrests were for cannabis possession, according to NORML’s analysis of FBI Crime Data Explorer figures. To put that into perspective, last year saw 204,036 cannabis-related arrests. However, most of those arrests weren’t for trafficking, but for personal use or simple possession: 187,792 possession cases (92%) 16,244 sale or production cases (only 8%) This breakdown shows that while personal use remains the main reason for arrest, punitive policies still…

When I hit U.S. soil after playing soldier in Germany and tasting Baghdad’s dust in 2005, I came back with souvenirs: two ticking time bombs called pharmaceuticals and alcohol.  They were courteous at first—pills like little government pamphlets suggesting calm, booze like a smiling grenade—and then suddenly you’re forgetting how to breathe between doctor appointments. Not a thing I’m looking to parade on a Sunday sermon, just laying asphalt for the road we’re about to drive full-throttle down. Fast-forward and I’d done the long, slow conversion: three years as a full-time patient at the VA, swapping pharmacy faith for the…
