Bloomberg news has obtained a letter from a “top” Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) official recommending that the US Drug Enforcement Administration reclassify cannabis from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance under federal law. Changes in the state-legal status of cannabis are not associated with rising motor vehicle fatalities, according to an analysis by the news agency Quartz Media LLC. Researchers affiliated with Quartz Advisors assessed trends in fatal motor vehicle accidents in four legalization states – California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada – as compared to five control states: Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Researchers analyzed data from 2016 to 2019. Federal survey data published this week by the US National Institutes of Health reports that rates of teen marijuana use remain near historic lows. Data provided by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health finds that just over 11 percent of those ages 12 to 17 report having consumed a cannabis product within the last year. Federally funded survey data provided by the University of Michigan reports that rates of teen marijuana use remain near historic lows. Public use of unregulated products containing delta-8-THC is greater in states where cannabis is criminalized, according to data published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Investigators affiliated with the University of Michigan, the University of Buffalo, and the Legacy Research Institute in Portland, Oregon analyzed survey results from over 1,100 respondents. Overall, 12 percent of respondents acknowledged having consumed delta-8-THC products in the past year.
