The federal government on Thursday officially reclassified regulated medical marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act, marking the most significant shift in U.S. cannabis policy in more than 50 years. The order, first reported by Associated Press, was signed under the Trump administration earlier today after months of accelerated pressure inside the Department of Justice. It immediately changes how cannabis is defined under federal law—formally acknowledging its accepted medical use for the first time since 1970, though it stops short of full federal legalization. “Today’s rescheduling of cannabis marks a historic turning point for the…
Legal on paper, restricted in practice. Inside Germany’s cannabis system, where cultivation is allowed but culture is kept at arm’s length. Last summer, I visited a legal German social club for the first time, somewhere in southwestern Germany. Chile is advancing a controversial reform that could impose harsher penalties for cannabis possession by shifting legal criteria from quantity to perceived “potential harm.” The move has sparked a constitutional challenge, raising concerns about legal ambiguity and the risk of criminalizing users, growers, and patients. Last week, the Chilean Congress advanced an amendment to Law 20,000 that toughens penalties for possession and small-scale trafficking of drugs classified as capable of causing “serious toxic effects or considerable harm to health.” Does cannabis fall under this category? Apparently, yes. This is not the first time the country has found itself caught between…

The drug’s history of healing and experimentation stretches from ancient China to American counterculture — yet its promise remains trapped in a legal straitjacket. This article is adapted from The MIT Press Reader and reprinted with permission. It is adapted from Cannabinoids by Linda A. Parker, published by MIT Press. An altered state of consciousness, euphoria, relaxation, increased enjoyment of food tastes and aromas, distortion in time perception, joviality, introspection, and a heightened sense of creativity: These are some of the reported “psychoactive effects” often experienced by cannabis users, and they are the same effects that the drug has had…
