It turns out that putting random fluids in a bong is a stoner curiosity as old as weed-smoking itself. So much so that we even did it ourselves several years ago. After smoking out of a bong long enough, questions inevitably arise: Will something other than water taste good? Will it kill me? Will it get me insanely higher? The internet is awash with articles and forums weighing the validity of different liquids in bongs. One guy tried bong rips (separately) with mouthwash, hot sauce, Mountain Dew, and ranch dressing—I mean, how bored does one have to get? Ranch rips aside,…
Every year, dozens of new cannabis strains are created, each one combining the flavors, aromas, and effects of two or more strains into a new one. Weed tastes and trends change all the time, and cannabis breeders continually create new strains to feed the interests of cannabis consumers. Weed is arguably one of the most cultivated plants (we’ve been growing it for at least 5,000 years), and growers can control the breeding and growing processes to select and refine the plant to suit various wants and needs. To explain how new weed strains are created, we need to start with plant sex.Weed breeding…
Testing cannabis products is essential for consumer safety—it ensures that cannabis consumers can buy products that have been approved by a licensed lab and are safe for consumption. One of the main benefits of cannabis legalization is that a state or nation will set up an agency to regulate the quality of cannabis products that are sold in that new market. All products are tracked in a legal market, and if an issue arises with a batch, a product can be recalled and consumers notified. When you buy weed from the illicit market, you never know what you’re going to get.…
Neither the passage of adult-use marijuana legalization laws nor the advent of retail cannabis sales is associated with increased marijuana use by adolescents, according to data published this week in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) Psychiatry. Researchers from Montana State University and San Diego State University assessed the relationship between state-level marijuana legalization laws and youth marijuana use over 28 years (1993-2021). Consistent with prior analyses, researchers determined, “There was no evidence that RML [recreational marijuana laws] were associated with encouraging youth marijuana use.” Commenting on the data, NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano said, “These findings should reassure…

Kentucky: Governor Signs Legislation Expediting Medical Cannabis Licensing, But Also Adding New Restrictions Upon Patients’ Access
Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear has signed legislation, House Bill 829, into law amending aspects of the state’s nascent medical cannabis access program. Specifically, it expedites the licensing process for medical cannabis businesses. As initially passed last year, the law delayed regulators from licensing cannabis providers until January 1, 2025. Under the newly signed law, applicants can begin the process of applying for licensure as soon as July 1, 2024. However, separate provisions in the new law will likely restrict some patients’ ability to access medical cannabis products. For example, HB 829 subjects patients to criminal background checks prior to entering…
