Federally funded survey data provided by the University of Michigan reports that teen marijuana use has declined significantly over the past decade and is now at historic lows. Consistent with data previously reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the University of Michigan’s annual Monitoring the Future report finds that cannabis use by young people is at a 30-year low. In the past decade alone, during which time 24 states legalized adult-use marijuana sales, the percentage of 8th graders, 10th graders, and 12 graders who reported having ever consumed cannabis…

Germany is wrapping up the most historic year for cannabis policy and industry in the nation’s history. Starting on April 1, 2024, adults in Germany could legally cultivate up to three plants in their private residences and possess up to 25 grams of cannabis when away from their homes. Next year will likely prove to be another historic year for German cannabis policy and industry. The most anticipated development in Germany for 2025 will be the launch of regional adult-use cannabis commerce pilot trials. Whereas European Union agreements prohibit national recreational cannabis sales, pilot trials are permitted under EU law…

Nebraska voters will decide this Election Day on a pair of citizen-initiated ballot measures regulating medical cannabis access to authorized patients. State regulators last week affirmed that advocates Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana had gathered the requisite number of signatures to place the measures before voters. The two measures are complementary. The first permits qualified patients to possess and use cannabis. The second measure regulates the production and distribution of cannabis to those authorized patients. Advocates had to frame the issue as two separate ballot questions in order to not run afoul of the state’s ‘single subject’ rule. In 2020, the…

Lifetime cannabis use is not associated with cognitive decline, according to longitudinal data published in the journal Brain and Behavior. Danish investigators assessed the relationship between cannabis use and age-related cognitive decline in a cohort of 5,162 men. Subjects’ IQs were assessed during early adulthood (mean age: 22) and then again in late midlife (mean age: 62). Researchers determined that participants with a history of cannabis use experienced “significantly less cognitive decline” over their lifetimes than did non-users. Among cannabis consumers, neither age of initiation nor frequency of use was associated with negative effects on cognition. They reported: “In this…

In the grand scheme of things, the legal global cannabis industry is just getting started. As it stands right now, 57 countries have adopted some form of medical cannabis legalization, and six countries have adopted national adult-use cannabis legalization measures. I’m a full Florida native, having been born and raised in Tampa before adventuring outside this state. When I was a younger stoner I remember visiting an “arcade” that was really just a discreet room in a shopping strip mall stacked with underground vendors – jars of edibles, mushrooms, and ounces of weed…it was the most quantity I had ever seen. Fast forward to a few months ago, when I noticed a recently opened Cookies dispensary ten minutes down the road from me. Florida has come a long way, but what a long and strange trip it has been down…
