Social Equity Applicant Opens Minnesota’s First State-Licensed Cannabis Shop Despite Local Council Opposition
On August 3 in Albert Lea, Minnesota, The Smoking Tree opened to the public. Owned by 29-year-old Jacob Schlichter, it is the state’s first state-licensed cannabis retailer. That “state-licensed” distinction is important. Nearly a dozen Tribal Nations in Minnesota have been selling cannabis under their own sovereign regulations for more than a year. Schlichter’s store is the first to open under the state’s new licensing program, which Governor Tim Walz signed into law in 2023 under HF 100. Schlichter was present at the signing ceremony. A License Followed by a Local Roadblock The Smoking Tree’s path to opening was not…

South Africa continues to move forward on the complex but promising road to marijuana regulation, facing adversities and legal gaps that involve private cannabis clubs, among others. Since the historic 2018 Constitutional Court ruling that decriminalized private cannabis use and cultivation, the country’s legal situation has been riddled with uncertainty, particularly for entrepreneurs and users. Despite some progress, the lack of clear regulations leaves the clubs in a sort of legal limbo, creating uncertainty and a growing demand for regulatory solutions. In this context, the South African Cannabis Clubs Alliance (SACCA) took a key step by unifying private clubs under…

Right now, the cannabis industry is standing at one of its most defining crossroads yet. The landscape we knew even a year or two ago is dissolving in real time. Brands that were once all over dispensary menus are vanishing entirely, casualties of oversaturation, brutal price wars, and a consumer base that has evolved faster than many operators anticipated. The audience is sharper, more informed, and far less willing to spend money on something that looks good but doesn’t deliver. For the companies still holding their ground, the fight has turned into a straight-up race to the bottom on pricing.…

For people like me, the mild, somewhat psychedelic effects from cannabis are nothing compared to the side effects of pharmaceutical pills. When people suggest that medical cannabis shouldn’t be used because of its impact on our daily functions, or because it’s slightly psychedelic, it’s always good for a good laugh. I learned this through lived experience. In 2011, I was diagnosed with HIV while living in Long Beach, California. A team of student nurses launched a project to pay people on the street $90 cash to get checked for HIV. One of my friends convinced me to join him and…

How legal weed is leaving the people and the culture behind. Scene: a white-walled, hermetically sealed dispensary that looks less like a place to buy weed and more like a backdrop from 2001: A Space Odyssey. It smells faintly of ionized air conditioning and plastic. Sleek iPads, LED mood lighting, and a curated playlist engineered to keep you calm enough to tip. Controlled.Unthreatening. Cannabis isn’t just a drug anymore (took long enough), and dispensaries aren’t just drug stores. They’re minimalist retail temples with $300 zips and brand copy straight out of an Organifi fever dream. Weed now comes in all…
The Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary celebration at Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park was less a concert and more a cosmic convergence. Dead and Company were joined by Billy Strings, Sturgill Simpson, and Trey Anastasio from Phish, each bringing their own magic to the party. For me, it was one of those rare moments where the past, present, and future all aligned in perfect harmony. Fans, both young and old, arrived with sky-high expectations. Tickets were not cheap. General admission three-day passes were $600, and VIP packages started at $1,500. A far cry from the free park shows the Grateful…
