CBD’s reputation still lingers somewhere between yoga studios and grandparents’ medicine cabinets. College students did not get that memo. According to a new, large-scale study from the University of Georgia, nearly half of college students have tried CBD, and close to one in three use it at least once a month. The reasons are familiar to anyone who has ever pulled an all-nighter, juggled classes with a job, or stared at the ceiling at 3 a.m., wondering why sleep will not happen. Anxiety. Stress. Sleep. And yes, friends offering it at a party. The biggest CBD study on college students…

For an article in the December, 1979 edition of High Times, late, great counterculture correspondent Glenn O’Brien examined the connections between Santa Claus and a specific kind of psychedelic mushroom known as the fly agaric, aka the toadstool that conquered the universe. In fact, the existence of Santa could be related to a shaman in Lapland who ate Amanita muscaria. Even the government supports the compelling association between Santa and the fly agaric. Was Santa a mushroom eater? The Secret Funk GospelsThe Santa Connection This year, as usual, you’re going to get a lot of reminders on the subject of the…

For years, critics of cannabis reform have leaned on the same warning: legal weed will lead to more teens using marijuana. The data keeps telling a different story. A Department of Defense (DoD)-funded clinical trial will study MDMA-assisted therapy paired with Massed Prolonged Exposure for PTSD in active-duty service members. For decades, MDMA lived far outside the walls of official medicine. Let alone the U.S. military. That wall just moved. The U.S. Department of Defense is funding a $4.9 million clinical trial investigating MDMA-assisted therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder in active-duty service members, marking a notable shift in how far psychedelic research has traveled into the federal mainstream. The study is led by researchers at Emory University and the STRONG STAR Consortium, and is examining the safety and…

On stretches of State Route 299, the sight of logging trucks has returned. Humboldt County’s timber economy once defined the region—until environmental restrictions, overharvesting, and shifts in global trade forced its decline in the 1990s. Cannabis filled the gap. What followed was another cycle of boom, regulation, and retreat—weed and wood: two strands shaping the DNA of California’s North Coast. Fishing faded. Mills closed. Tourism never quite arrived. Federally funded survey data compiled by the University of Michigan reports that teen marijuana use has declined significantly since states began regulating adult-use cannabis markets and is now at or near historic lows. Consistent with numerous other federally sponsored surveys, teens’ use of cannabis has steadily declined since 2012 — when voters in Colorado and Washington passed ballot initiatives regulating the adult-use marijuana market. To date, 24 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana use for those 21 and older. Between 2012 and 2025, the percentage of 12th graders reporting having ever used cannabis fell 23 percent. Among…

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has reached a level of everyday intimacy where it’s starting to feel like a friend. We argue over dinner recipes, plan trips, ask how to fix things around the house, and sometimes even bring our personal dilemmas to it (an intimacy that, as we’re learning, doesn’t always come without risks). This is now standard behavior. Large language model chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini are always on standby, ready to answer just about any question we throw at them. But what happens when those chatbots—so often mistakenly “humanized”—start responding as if they were on drugs? Many people, sometimes…
