    / TOP THINGS TO KNOW

President Donald Trump’s new Fiscal Year 2026 budget request proposes to delete a longstanding provision that protects state medical cannabis laws from federal interference while continuing a separate rider that has blocked Washington, D.C. from legalizing recreational marijuana sales.

The Czech Republic Chamber of Deputies passed a bill to legalize possession and home cultivation of marijuana, and to allow medical use of psilocybin.

The Florida Division of Elections reported that a marijuana campaign seeking to put a legalization initiative on the 2026 ballot has now collected more than enough valid signatures to trigger a judicial and financial impact review of the measure.

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo (R) signed a bill to stop automatically disqualifying people from becoming foster parents due to past marijuana convictions.

Texas lawmakers sent Gov. Greg Abbott (R) a bill to create an ibogaine therapy research consortium, through which the state would retain a commercial interest in “all intellectual property that may be generated over the course of the drug development clinical trials.”

The California Assembly is expected to vote on a bill this week to delay the implementation of a planned tax hike on marijuana, an increase that cannabis industry advocates say would detract from efforts to mitigate the illicit market.

A new federally funded study published by the American Medical Association shows that “between 2021 and 2023, prevalence of current cannabis use increased among older adults nationally”—with particular increases seen in people with conditions like cancer, hypertension and diabetes.

The Bloomwell Group’s Niklas Kouparanis argues in a new Marijuana Moment op-ed that of the differing legalization approaches being taken by European countries, Germany “stands out in terms of producing a measurable impact to push back against the illicit cannabis market.”

A Nebraska bill that would ban most consumable hemp products has stalled until at least next year over disagreements among lawmakers about including protections for medical cannabis products.

South Dakota’s attorney general announced that a former state Department of Health employee has been charged with falsifying her own medical cannabis card.

Oklahoma’s attorney general filed a response in federal court opposing a preliminary injunction against a state immigration law he says is “designed to address illegal activities including unauthorized marijuana cultivation and fentanyl distribution that have exploded in the state due to inadequate border security.”

Florida’s agriculture commissioner sent a reminder that new hemp rules will be enforced starting June 16.

Illinois cannabis reform bills stalled without final action, but can potentially be revived in the fall veto session.

Pennsylvania lawmakers discussed the prospects for enacting marijuana legalization legislation by a budget deadline at the end of this month. Separately, a representative tweeted about the ongoing cannabis legalization debate in the state, saying, “House Dems passed our plan, but we can’t negotiate with ourselves. Senate Rs—where’s your bill?”

Florida regulators are developing new hemp rules.

U.S. Virgin Islands regulators sent an update on the cannabis business licensing process.

Washington State regulators are conducting a survey of cannabis business employees.

Oregon regulators overhauled their cannabis rulemaking website.

Georgia regulators will consider issuing medical cannabis dispensary licenses to production businesses on Wednesday.
